Bittersweet is the emotion that best describes the feeling I get as I watch Bader Gymnasium being taken down. After all, Bader has been home to many chapels, Makin' Music shows, and intramural games. But change can be good, and the cost to maintain/repair the aging building (Yikes, $100,000/yr just to heat the old pool!) are just too high. It makes much more sense to use that money in other ways to benefit our students. So while I'm sad to see Bader go, I'm excited about the plans to beautify the campus, including the area where Bader currently stands. I think we'll be impressed.
On the other hand, it's good news that the decision was made to preserve Old Main. This building has such a rich heritage and is an important part of FHU's history. The plan is to make the outside of the building and the main lobby area look the way it would have looked when Old Main was originally built. Of course the classrooms and offices will be updated, and some modern conveniences such as a sprinkler system and elevator will be added.
Whenever you have a chance, we'd love to have you stop by campus, visit with us, and see what exciting changes are taking place.
