Summary: The Dean of Graduate Studies and Outreach is responsible for enhancing graduate studies and outreach programs at Freed-Hardeman University. In coordination with other senior members of the Office of Academics and Enrollment Management, academic deans and graduate program directors, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Outreach plays a senior leadership role in all aspects of graduate studies and outreach at Freed-Hardeman University and provides academic, administrative, and strategic direction for the university’s graduate studies and outreach programs.
This position is vitally important to the future of Freed-Hardeman University and the play a significant role in shaping the future of the university’s graduate studies programs and satellite campus initiatives. As a member of the Vice President’s leadership team, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Outreach will be conversant with all aspects of the university’s growth and will represent and advocate all issues of graduate studies and outreach in campus planning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Administrative
- Coordinates articulates, and presents a vision for graduate studies and satellite programs; translates this vision into strategic goals by developing a unit plan related to the University’s mission and strategic plan; works collegially with academic dean’s and graduate program directors to ensure collaboration and successful implementation of the graduate program’s mission.
- Participates in university strategic planning activities, especially as related to graduate studies and outreach.
- Develops and implements university policies related to graduate studies and outreach.
- Manages and supervises the graduate studies office and staff.
- Responsible for all fiscal matters for the unit; plans for, requests, and disburses operational, travel, and other funds legally, responsibly and consistently within given budget limitations.
- Coordinates community outreach and continuing education programs.
- Manages and supervises academic operations at satellite locations.
- Actively participates in Academic Council meetings, initiatives, and activities.
- Actively participates in Graduate Council meetings, initiatives, and activities.
Enrollment Management
- Develops, implements and assesses a coordinated enrollment management strategy for graduate studies consistent with the university’s overall enrollment management goals
- Develops campus graduate enrollment plans consistent with overall campus academic plans; devoting particular attention to the attraction and retention of a diverse student body.
- Provides oversight and coordination in the overall campus wide recruitment of graduate students, including promotion of its graduate and outreach programs.
- Coordinates the graduate admissions and registration process.
Graduate Program Development and Review
- Provides campus-wide curricular leadership in relation to university goals by initiating, sustaining, delivering, or eliminating graduate programs.
- Works with academic deans and graduate program directors to coordinate the implementation of new graduate programs.
- Works with academic deans and graduate program directors to ensure maintenance of the highest academic standards as demonstrated in assessment outcomes
- Provides coordination in the construction of timely class schedules for graduate studies based on student needs and institutional resources including advisement and registration.
- Develops new curriculum and reviews and revises existing curriculum with unit faculty, considering student needs, workforce trends, and available resources; supervises and submits program reviews; ensures successful accreditation; and facilitates activities at the unit level to seamlessly integrate unit goals with university goals.
Graduate Research and Support
- Works with deans to stimulate scholarship/research activities among the graduate faculty.
- Provides leadership and oversight to campus efforts directed to increase graduate student support and research funding.
- Provides leadership to secure external funds from individuals, organizations, and agencies to increase graduate support and research funding.
- Supervises graduate fellowship and teaching assistants allocations in coordination with academic deans and graduate directors in a manner that advances the strategic direction of the unit and the university.
Requirements:
An earned terminal degree in a graduate discipline currently taught at the university. Prior administrative and budgetary experience. Demonstrated ability to foster a work environment characterized by excellence and quality improvement. Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain productive relationships internal and external to an academic unit. Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement strategic planning within a given unit’s mission and goals.
