The Department of Fine Arts offers a B.A. major in Art with an emphasis in Studio, Graphic Design, or Merchandising and Interiors. Teaching Licensure in Visual Arts K-12 is available by completion of the B.A. in Art and the required professional education courses.
The Art program at Freed-Hardeman University allows students to major in art and select an emphasis in studio, graphic design, or interiors. The major prepares students for a broad choice of careers: painter, photographer, sculptor, graphic designer, interior designer, or art educator. The art faculty has the ability to help students develop creative thinking skills within their individual style. Field lab courses allow for practical interaction and networking with graphic and interior design professionals, while guest artists and visits to important exhibits provide exposure to some of the best artists in the field. Art students have frequent opportunities to exhibit work in both off- and on-campus venues, including the campus’s Troy Plunk Gallery, which hosts local, regional, and national artists. First-place honors at state and regional shows are not uncommon among our students and faculty.
Interior design students study courses in businesses, studio art, art history, and interior design. In the interior design courses students study environmental design, building construction, history of interior design, housing, computer applications related to interiors, professional practice, and portfolio preparation.
