Over 150 years ago, Alexis de Tocqueville observed, “Scarcely any political question arises in the United States that is not resolved, sooner or later, into a judicial question.” The world is shaped by political disputes, and in America political disputes are still profoundly influenced, and often decided, by the courts. The major in Law and Politics examines critical issues of power, liberty, equality, legitimacy, and the state, with special emphasis on the role of law and the legal system in their determination. Our students focus on developing an understanding of the relationships between government, politics and law by examining the philosophical and constitutional foundations of the American republic, its political and legal systems, and contemporary issues in both fields.
The major in Law and Politics helps students become informed, responsible citizens while preparing them for advanced studies and careers in fields like law, government, education, business, journalism, public service and the military.
