Program Update
FHU will no longer accept applications for the Associates Degree in Nursing.
In September 2009, the Tennessee Board of Nursing voted to withdraw approval of the Associates Degree program and acted to not allow a subsequent class to be admitted. The major reason sited by the board for this action was:
FHU students taking the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) failed to reach the necessary 85% passing mark required by the board for the second year in a row. The first year, FHU received a 78% passing rate. The second year, FHU received a 66% passing rate.
The Board clarified its action to explain that the school’s current nursing classes remain on conditional approval such that the graduates will be eligible for licensure. The Board stated that if FHU wishes to reinstate the program it must file a letter of intent and request initial approval. At this time FHU will not ask for reinstatement of the Associates Degree. Our letter of intent will reflect our desire to move forward with a BSN program.
FHU has begun the process of developing this new nursing program. A consultant has been identified to evaluate our curriculum and guide us through the process. The university is also currently seeking a new director for the nursing program.
Our goal is to complete the process so as to begin admitting students in Spring 2011. We are committed to offering a quality program and our decision to discontinue our Associates Degree reflects this commitment. Because of the nature of this action, we cannot give a certain date for the beginning of the new program until we are further along in the process. As information becomes available, this site will be updated.
