The study of God’s Word is central to the curriculum of Freed-Hardeman University, and an important part of that instruction is the study of Missions. For the last several years Freed-Hardeman has offered both a major and minor in Missions. The basic thrust of this discipline is the study of concepts and principles that are applicable to preaching and teaching the Word of God in both foreign and domestic mission fields to win souls and plant churches that will be indigenous to their locality.
Some of the courses offered in this area are: Bible Basis of Missions, Missionary Principles and Practices, History of Missions, Missionary Strategies, and Intercultural Communications. There are also opportunities to do practical and credited “field labs” that can be specifically designed for particular works in different countries as well as domestic mission points. In addition to these courses, there is the opportunity to “rub shoulders” with the Missions faculty in such activities as the twice monthly meeting of “Missions Group,” attendance at the yearly World Mission Workshop of Christian Universities (FHU will host this event in 2009), and by participation in campaigns to all parts of the world.
The Missions faculty has a combined experience of over 40 years of foreign mission work. There are other professors with mission experience who teach courses from time to time. Freed-Hardeman is very dedicated to the task of preparing and encouraging more students to become involved in the preaching and teaching of the Gospel throughout the world. You will find this area of study in your Freed-Hardeman experience to be both practical and rewarding. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
