What is Supplemental Instruction?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of free, weekly, peer-assisted study sessions in selected courses identified as being historically difficult. SI is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding of course material, improve their grades and become independent learners. SI is a non-remedial approach to the learning as the program targets high-risk courses rather than high-risk students. Attendance at sessions is voluntary. SI sessions are led by competent students who have shown mastery in the course material.
Why should I attend SI sessions?
Students who attend SI sessions on a regular basis usually average one or more letter grades higher than those who do not attend sessions. A better understanding of course content, as well as more effective ways of studying, will be gained. By attending SI, students will have the opportunity to develop relationships with other students and broaden a base of academic support.
Why is SI effective?
SI sessions allow students the opportunity to discuss course concepts, check accuracy of class notes in small groups, and participate in exercises targeting test preparation. All activities are conducted in a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere. The purpose of the program is to increase retention and improve student grades in the targeted courses and increase the graduation rates of students.
What can be expected at an SI session?
The SI Leader will enforce main concepts from the lecture, provide test reviews, give practice tests and quizzes, and share problem solving techniques. Sessions are focused, yet informal, with students being encouraged to bring notes, books, and questions.
SI sessions will begin after the SI leader has conducted a survey to determine the best time.
