2001 lady lion softball season


2/20/2001

Rhodes College

4 p.m.


Rhodes, 6; FHU, 0; Rhodes, 10; FHU, 2

The young Lady Lions fell, 6-0,to a more experienced Rhodes College team in their first outing of the season. Losing pitcher was Lorrie Shepherd with three strikeouts. In the second game, FHU got on the board, scoring two runs, driven in by freshman Beth Karraker. Laurie Hinton took the loss.

Bethel College

2 p.m.


Bethel, 4; FHU, 0; FHU, 2; Bethel, 1

The Lady Lions played well defensively, giving up only three earned runs in a 4-0 loss to Bethel College. Lorrie Shepherd was the losing pitcher. FHU took their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Bethel in the second game. Tequila Bridges drove in the runs with a double in the fifth inning. Laurie Hinton recorded her first collegiate win.

University of North Alabama

UNA, 7; FHU, 0; UNA, 8; FHU, 0

The Lady Lions dropped two games to NCAA II University of North Alabama Thursday in Florence, 7-0 and 8-0. Although FHU played better defensively, bats remained cold. UNA hit three home runs in the first game and one in the second.

Mid Continent College

4 p.m.


MC-6, FHU-3; FHU-8, MC-3

In the first game, Mid Continent defeated FHU, 6-3, as freshman Lorie Hinton took the loss. Errors plagued the Lady Lions. Kimmie Sabiel recorded two singles for the offense and had a stolen base. In the second game, the Lady Lions defeated MidContinent, 8-3, as Lorrie Shepherd recorded her first win. The offense began to work as the Lady Lions hit well. Shepherd helped her own cause as she drove in two runs to give the Lady Lions a 6-3 lead.

Martin Methodist College

2 p.m.


MMC-6, FHU-0; MMC-5, FHU-1

Martin Methodist College handed the Lady Lions a couple of conference losses March 9 as they defeated FHU, 6-0 and 5-1. In the first game, errors amd cold bats were once again the culprit. Losing pitcher was Laurie Hinton. In the second game, the Lady Lions hit better but again errors resulted in three unearned runs. Lorrie Shepherd was the losing pitcher.

Union University

UU-8, FHU-3; UU-10, FHU-0

The Lady Lions dropped a double header to Union University March 20, 8-3 and 10-0. Laurie Hinton was the losing pitcher.FHU led 1-0 going into the bottom of the third, but Union scored three runs to take the lead.The Lady Lions did not recover. Union pitcher Rachel Murray dominated the Lady Lions in the second game as she struck out 11 batters in five innings.

Cumberland University

CU-7, FHU-0; CU-5, FHU-2

The Lady Lion softball team lost both halves of a doubleheader to Cumberland University, 7-0 and 5-2, March 22 at Associates Field. In the opener, Tequila Bridges pitched her first complete game since surgery, striking out four. In the second game, Laurie Hinton had six strikeouts. Meredith Murry returned from a knee injury to go two for three and drive in a run.

FHU-7, LU-5; LU-7, FHU-6

In the first game of the doubleheader, freshman Laurie Hinton was the winning pitcher for the Lady Lions as FHU defeated Lee, 7-5. Kristina Ross hit a grand slam home run in the first inning. FHU never trailed in the game. FHU lost the second game, 6-7. Pitcher Lorrie Shepherd had two doubles and three RBIs.

Trevecca University

1 p.m.


TNU-8, FHU-0; TNU-7, FHU-3

The Lady Lions lost both ends of a doubleheader to Trevecca Nazarene University, 0-8 and 3-7. FHU was unable to manufacture any run support for pitcher Tequila Bridges. The Lady Lions gave up five runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach. FHU lost the second game in nine innings. After seven, the score was tied. Laurie Hinton pitched. Kelly Klacik had three singles and scored a run.

The Lady Lions committed three errors in the first two innings, costing them three runs. They were never able to recover. Lorrie Shepherd pitched for FHU.

The Lady Lions dropped a pair of close ones April 3 in Cleveland, Tenn. Lee University defeated FHU, 5-4 and 3-2. Laurie Hinton and Lorrie Shepherd were the losing pitchers.

CU-2, FHU-0; CU-11, FHU-4

The Lady Lions dropped a pair April 5 in Lebanon, Tenn., to Cumberland University, 2-0 and 11-4. In the first game, FHU pitcher Lorrie Shepherd gave up eight hits. FHU had six hits, including two by shortstop Kelly Klacik. In the second game, freshman Laurie Hinton pitched six innings allowed eight earned runs. FHU committed three errors. FHU scored four runs on three hits, including a double by leftfielder Beth Karraker.

FHU had ten hits in game one to give the Lady Lions the victory over Williams Baptist. Laurie Hinton was the winning pitcher, Erica Aday was the catcher. In game two, Lorrie Shepherd was the winning pitcher, with Aday as catcher. FHU had ten hits.

DLU-7, FHU-2; DLU-12, FHU-0

The Lady Lions dropped two games to Lipscomb. In the first game they had one hit. They also had one hit in game two.

Union University

UU-12, FHU-2; UU-17, FHU-2

Conference powerhouse Union University dealt the Lady Lions two losses Tuesday, 12-2 and 17-0, at Associates Field.

Bethel College

3:30 p.m.


BC-7, FHU-3; FHU-8, BC-0

Freed-Hardeman and Bethel split a doubleheader Wednesday at Associates Field. Bethel won the opener, 7-3, but FHU shut out Bethel, 8-0, in the second. Senior Lorrie Shepherd pitched a perfect game in her last home appearance as a Lady Lion. She gave up no hits, no walks, and no runs. She struck out three as the Lady Lions run-ruled Bethel.

Martin Methodist College

MMC-2, FHU-0; MMC-3, FHU-0

Martin Methodist defeated Freed-Hardeman twice in a conference double header in Pulaski, Tenn. FHU failed to score in either game, despite getting nine hits on the afternoon. In the first game, FHU pitcher Laurie Hinton held Martin Methodist scoreless until the sixth inning. In the second game, all of the Indians' runs came in the fourth.

TNU-4, FHU-3; TNU-3, FHU-2

The Lady Lions lost a couple of close games to Trevecca Saturday, 4-3 and 3-2, in Nashville. In the first game, Lorrie Shepherd hit a home run in the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3. Trevecca scored in the ninth inning for the win. In the second game, the Lady Lions again tied the game in the top of the seventh, only to see Trevecca go ahead in the bottom of the seventh.

Martin Methodist (conf. tourney)

11 a.m.


MMC-6, FHU-3

The Lady Lions and Martin Methodist were tied 3-3 at the end of six innings, but MMC scored three times in the seventh to win in the first round of the conference tournament. Laurie Hinton pitched for FHU.

Lee University

2 p.m.


LU-4, FHU-3

Lee University eliminated the Lady Lions from the conference tournament with a come-from-behind, 4-3, victory.Lee jumped out to a quick lead with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning. FHU scored three times in the fourth only to see Lee tie the game in the fifth. Lee got the winning run in the top of the eighth. Lorrie Shepherd was the losing pitcher.
