This is my first time to take part in #LeadershipDay10! Scott McLeod at Dangerously Irrelevant has challenged all Education Bloggers to take part in Leadersip in Education today. I currently teach EDU 610 - Leadership Theories and Applications (online) at Freed-Hardeman University. This is one of several courses that is part of the M.Ed. in Leadership and Supervision (Licensure Track).
I cannot help but ask myself if I am truly preparing today's candidate for 21st Century Leadership.
I served 6 years as an assistant principal and 5 years as a principal in the middle school arena for the Mobile County Public School System from 1993 - 2003. I have been away from the center of operations for over 7 years now. I purposely make sure that I interact with K-12 schools through the AdvancED accreditation process; however, is that enough to make sure that I am current? I was involved with the TN State Board of Education from 2006 - 2008 in designing the TN Instructional Leadership Standards and process for instructing new candidates for leadership positions.
That is one reason why I feel that it is so important for me to interact with my PLN: @ShellTerrell, @NMHS_Principal, @kylepace, @AngelaMaiers, @rmbyrne, @SimpleK12, @SweetieBerry, @Thanks2Teachers, @bhsprincipal, @blairteach, @cybraryman1, @web20education, @jrhode, @gcouros, @clifmims, @jasonbedell, @tomwhitby, @michaelmgrant, @BarbaraNixon, @web20classroom, @shannonmmiller, @johnccarver, @eduinnovation, @Philip_Cummings, @EdTechLeader, @rroysden, @internet4classr, @BlondeTC and @jimmylogan are just a few that assist me on a weekly basis as I follow them on Twitter!! Many of them are currently working as assistant principals and principals. I am able to "see" through their eyes what is important in todays world. I must ensure that I am not teaching in the 20th Century model of leadership!
We are now into the second decade of the 21st Century; therefore, it is very important that the items that I discuss in my class are truly applicable to today's faculty, staff, students, parents and community!
