How are hall and roommate assignments made?
Students whose deposits are received before the April 1st priority deadline will be placed first. Priority is determined by the date on which the housing deposit is received by the Housing Office. If you request to live with a particular person, and that person requests you, every effort will be made to honor that request. If you do not indicate a preference, the information on the housing application will be used to choose a suitable roommate.
Returning students select their rooms during the spring term for the following Fall term. New students to Freed Hardeman are assigned a residence hall room during the summer and receive their assignments via mail.
When will my room assignment and roommate information be sent?
New students to FHU are assigned a residence hall room during the summer (by July 15) and receive their assignments by mail. Returning students will receive their assignments prior to the end of each semester via email.
What if I do not like my assignment?
If you are unsatisfied with your assignment, you may request a change during our free move period. Free Move period will be a two week period within the first month of each term. The availability of space will determine your chances for a room change.
Are private rooms available?
Students may request a private room, but private rooms are not guaranteed and are awarded as space becomes available.
Are there internet and telephones connections in each room?
Each residence hall room can connect to the internet. You will need an ethernet card to access the network, and both PCs and Macs are compatible with our network. Wireless internet connectivity is also available in each dorm. We do not offer telephone service in the dorms.
How long are the beds?
Our beds are extra long twin mattresses which means they are 81" long.
What size are the rooms?
The sizes of rooms vary from hall to hall. Please visit the Residence Hall page for more information.
Will my financial aid or scholarship cover my $100 housing payment?
No, a housing prepayment must accompany your application/license agreement for University housing and cannot be taken from financial aid or scholarship awards.
Who will clean my room?
Although custodial workers are employed in all residence halls to keep all public areas and public/community bathrooms clean, you are expected to clean your own room and bathrooms.
What should I bring?

Are my personal belongings insured by the University?
No. The University does not assume responsibility at any time for the private property of its students and is not liable for the loss or damage of any article for personal property anywhere on the premises. You or your parents are encouraged to carry appropriate insurance to cover your personal belongings.
Can I stay in the residence hall during breaks and vacations?
Residence halls remain open during the Thanksgiving and Spring Break periods. Special housing arrangements may be offered for other break periods but the University reserves the right to make such determinations on a break-by-break basis. There will be a weekly charge for occupancy during specific break periods.
May I store my belongings in my room for the summer months?
No. Because the residence halls are used for summer school, camps, conferences, and under renovations during the summer months, students are not allowed to store any belongings or property on campus during the summer.
May I have overnight guests of the same sex in my room?
Yes, but only if they have guest approval from a host student and do not create a disturbance to your roommate or other residents. Guests of residents are not permitted to stay for longer than 3 nights per week. Students residing in University housing are responsible for assuring that their guests are aware of and comply with all policies and procedures of the University residence halls.
Dining
Can I change my meal plan once the semester begins?
Yes, you can change your meal plan prior to the drop/add date which is approximately two weeks into the semester.
How do I change my meal plan?
You can do this by email (dhinson@fhu.edu), by fax (731-989-6953) or in person at the Student Accounts Office in Gardner Center.
What is a Lion Buck?
Lion Bucks are campus currency used in the dining hall and Lion's Pride. Most meal plans include Lion Bucks. However, additional Lion Bucks can be purchased in $25 increments from the Student Accounts Office.
Can I charge Lion Bucks to my student account?
If you have a credit balance on your account you may charge a Lion Bucks purchase to your account.
How do I purchase Lion Bucks?
Call 731-989-6008 or 1-800-FHU-FHU1 ext. 6008. You may also email dhinson@fhu.edu or come by in person to the cash window in the Gardner Center.
What other forms of payment do you accept?
We accept most major credit/debit cards, checks and cash.
