About Me

Dr. Sharen L. Cypress currently serves as dean of the College of Education & Behavioral Sciences at Freed-Hardeman University, where she also serves as the accreditation coordinator for the Department of Education. Prior to her tenure at Freed-Hardeman University, she served as an elementary teacher in the Fayette County School District and as a middle school teacher and school counselor in the Legacy Shelby County School System.

Dr. Cypress began her administrative duties at Freed-Hardeman University as director of field experiences and director of school counseling, before assuming the role of dean. She received a B. S. degree in Elementary Education from Freed-Hardeman University, an M. Ed. in Counseling and Personnel Services and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, from the University of Memphis (UofM). Following her studies in the Department of Leadership at the UofM, Dr. Cypress continued to work in collaboration with her mentor and colleague, Dr. Reginald L. Green, Professor of Leadership at the University of Memphis, on various reform initiatives; including the development of a leadership enhancement seminar entitled: Building Leadership Capacity in Schools: Soaring to New Heights.

In addition to her educational contributions, Dr. Cypress serves as a Lead Site Visitor for the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), formally known as the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Her contributions to the state involves her role as a state board examiner for colleges and universities in the state of Tennessee and serving as a member of the Executive Board of the Tennessee Association for Colleges of Teacher Education (TACTE) as the chair of the Communications Committee from 2009-2013. During the 2014-2015 academic year, Dr. Cypress served as a member of the Institute for Higher Education Advisory Board (IHE). This work enriched her knowledge and passion for serving as an advisor for the implementation of MOOCs and INVEST resources created to enhance teacher and leadership preparation for K-12 educators across the state of Tennessee and beyond. Most recently, Dr. Cypress was appointed by Governor Bill Haslim to serve on the Standards Recommendation Committee. This committee is charged with overseeing K-12 academic standards in the state of Tennessee. Dr. Cypress' true passion for K-12 education and the preparation of educators has fueled her vision at Freed-Hardeman University and in her work across the state of Tennessee of becoming the "Gateway to Excellence in Education ."

Dr. Cypress enjoys speaking at educational conferences and conducting biblical lectures. In the School of Education, she has taught various courses relative to school counseling, educational leadership and teacher education, which support her research interests in transforming professional school counseling, team building, working with the diverse needs of students, and building relationships within the school and community. Her outside interests include traveling, singing, reading, and assisting others through spiritual activities.
