CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER/ VICE PRESIDENT FOR FINANCIAL SERVICES

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO)/Vice President for Financial Services is responsible for the administration of all financial operations of Freed Hardeman University. Our CFO will oversee and enhance the financial management of the University, which includes financial strategy, capital plans, debt management, and cash management, while serving as a key advisor to the president, the cabinet, and department heads on financial and non-financial strategic issues.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business with a minimum of 7, preferably 10 years experience in a senior role.

  • CPA designation and Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) degree preferred. Experience in higher-level education would be helpful but is not required.

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various constituencies of the University.

  • Must be an active member in good standing of the church of Christ.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct and coordinate the activities of departments reporting directly to the CFO, which include: Financial Services, Human Resources, Controller, Investments, Auxiliary Services, Postal Services, and other areas as assigned by the president.

  • Identify and implement strategies and processes to ensure the continued professional development of staff reporting to this position.

  • Monitor departmental activities and customer satisfaction; identify and implement appropriate improvement measures to increase efficiency of processes and effectiveness of the team.

  • Establish, coordinate, maintain, and systematically review the process for financial evaluation of the University’s budgets, forecast and risk.

  • Report the financial condition of the University to the president, cabinet, and Board of Trustees. Work closely and cooperatively with committees of the Board of Trustees or the University to provide leadership within the institutional planning process that integrates educational, fiscal, and advancement goals.

 

Budget Preparation and Controls Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development and administration of the budgets for all departments within the University, providing fiscal budget controls for each department within Financial Services.

  • Responsible for the proper handling of all University funds in accordance with applicable state statutes and with the policies of the University and Board of Trustees. Management of the investments of the University’s operating and endowment funds and the proper allocation of such.

  • Direct the use of reserve and restricted funds and monitor fiscal operations; oversee all financial operations of the University including receivables, expenditures, payroll, and reconciliation.

  • Serve as an advocate for the University with external parties, as needed, to ensure the most beneficial financial arrangements are in place for the University. Negotiate contracts between the University and external parties to ensure funding is available as needed and in accordance with approved budgets and financial policies and procedures.

 

Cabinet/Administrative Responsibilities:

  • The daily leadership of Freed-Hardeman rests upon the president and vice presidents who comprise the president’s cabinet. The CFO participates in the overall governance of the University, and serves as a member of the president’s cabinet and other committees as assigned by the President.
