After School Art to Start at FHU
Freed-Hardeman University’s “After School Art” program will have its first session Thursday, Sept. 15. “After School Art” is an opportunity for children ages 5 to 11 to both learn about and create art.
Dr. Barbara England, chair of the Department of Fine Arts and associate professor ofaArt, is in charge of the program. England, who started the program in 1996, says that she wanted “to provide the community children with an opportunity to learn more about art.” England participated in an art program as a child and felt “very important to be a little kid who was going to college!”
England’s art education class originates the curriculum to teach the children. Some activities that the students have planned for the semester are Picasso faces, cave art, mask making, and mosaic masterpieces. England believes that her art education students need the opportunity to work with children; she states, “These experiences for my students will help them be better prepared for work in schools.”
“After School Art” is a free program that meets on Thursdays at 3:45 p.m. If your child is interested in attending, call Kim Cook at 989-6089.
