FHU To Open Career Center

Longtime Freed-Hardeman University employee Jim Brown has been appointed director of the new University Career Center. Brown has worked in undergraduate admissions, graduate admissions, and student retention, as well as with the FHU School of Business, most recently serving as the director of admissions for the MBA program and as the head of the School of Business Career Center.

The primary functions of the University Career Center will be to educate students about the career development process and work with employers to provide internships and full-time job opportunities. “The Career Center is a place where all students, regardless of their major, can come for career development advice and assistance. In today’s competitive job market, students cannot afford to wait until their junior and senior years to begin thinking about their career options. They must begin from their first days as an FHU student to explore these options and enhance their career skills,” said Brown.

The University Career Center will assist students with resume and cover letter development, help them develop their own career network, and provide students a career network of FHU alumni in their chosen career field. “We want to work with alumni and friends of the University to create a career network that can provide our students with possible internships and full-time jobs as well as well as job shadowing, mock interviews, and other career enhancements.”

Integral to this entire process is communication and teamwork between the University Career Center and the various campus departments. “There has already been a tremendous amount of communication and support from faculty and administration,” said Brown.

The University Career Center will be located in the Burks Student Center. It is a branch of the Office of Student Services and falls under the jurisdiction of Wayne Scott, vice president of student services. “It was time for this move. This will be a great opportunity for our students. One day we hope to have major employers coming to our campus to interview students—in my book, that would mean we’re successful,” said Scott.

Full career center services, including a website, will be available March 1. For more information, please contact Jim Brown at jbrown@fhu.edu or 731-989-6449.
