Georgia Museum Features Work of FHU Art Teacher

The work of a Freed-Hardeman University art teacher is currently being featured at an exhibition organized by the Georgia Museum of Art. “Prints by Women: Selected European and American Works” includes prints by Laquita Thomson. The exhibition includes 48 prints—woodcuts, lithographs, drypoints, etchings, screenprints and more—ranging from the 19th through the 21st centuries, each by a different European or American woman artist. The traveling show is at the Arts Clayton Gallery in Jonesboro, Ga., until Sept. 23.

Three of the most important European women artists: Rosa Bonheur, Berthe Morisot and Kathe Kollwitz are featured in the exhibition. In addition, work done by American women under the auspices of Roosevelt’s New Deal is included. Finally, the exhibition includes four living contemporary artists: Claire Clements, Ynez Johnston, Emily Trueblood and Thomson.

Thomson’s work, entitled “Cotton Field II,” is a reduction linocut on paper. A linocut is a variation of a woodcut technique utilizing a sheet of linoleum for the relief surface, first used by German artists between 1905-13. Go to www.georgiamuseum.org for a complete listing of the exhibition.
