FHU Students, Teachers Attend Music Conference

A group of six students and two faculty members from Freed-Hardeman University attended an October conference at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. All six students are members of the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME), the professional organization for music majors and minors.

Dr. Scott Shuler, national president of NAfME, presented two sessions at the Fall Kick-off Professional Development Conference. In addition, students attended a variety of sessions on such topics as copyright, arranging, classroom management, handling the school budget, concert preparation, health issues of musicians, and instrument repair.

Stephen Foster, FHU band director and assistant professor of music, presented a session entitled “Money, Money, Money! Staying on Top of the School Music Budget.” The session provided information about the financial duties of an ensemble director.

Sarah Burns, music professor and coordinator of the music program at FHU, also attended the meeting. She sponsors the FHU chapter of NAfME and is the co-director of Standing Room Only, FHU’s show choir.

The six students who attended the conference were Jackie Dukes, Ginny Primm, Andie Godwin, Sara Schneider, and Laura Glidewell.
