Alabama Magazine Publishes Article by FHU Art Professor

Henderson, Tenn. - May 05, 2016

The Spring 2016 edition of Alabama Heritage includes a ten-page article by Laquita Thomson, associate professor of fine arts at Freed-Hardeman University. It is the 30th anniversary issue of the magazine.

The article, “Lois Wilson: An Outsider Before Her Time,” deals with the work of an Alabama native born in 1905 to poor sharecroppers. “Long before the Outsider Movement began,” Thomson wrote, “Lois Wilson was working to establish the kind of artistic practices that would help define it.”

Thomson specializes in studio art and in art history research. She holds degrees from Mississippi University for Women, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Auburn University and University of Alabama at Huntsville. Her research was credited in two films in 2012, “Maltby Sykes, Gentleman Modernist” by Dale Schierholt, and “Treasures from the Rubble” by Alexandra Branyon.

Alabama Heritage is a nonprofit educational quarterly published by the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Alabama Department of Archives and History. To learn more about the magazine or to subscribe, individuals may visit alabamaheritage.com.
