The University Career Center at Freed-Hardeman University has undergone many changes in the 2012-13 school year, with new opportunities being offered to both students and alumni. The career center’s mission is “to assist Freed-Hardeman students and alumni with their career development and help them transition from college to their career.”
As of August 2012, the center is utilizing College Central Network, a user-friendly database that allows employers to advertise internships and jobs. Students who join the network can submit resumes and complete national searches for jobs. Jim Brown, director of the University Career Center, says this new technology has gotten a good response and has been helpful to students.
The University Career Center provides a number of services, including job shadowing, job interview preparation, internships and full-time job opportunities. Career counseling is available in order to assess where students are in career development. At the center, students can complete assessment testing and research possibilities for their chosen degree.
Workshops are offered on resume and cover letter writing, interview skills and research development. This semester, the center will host career fairs for various schools and departments. Brown hopes to provide a job fair for every department in the future.
The School of Education Career Fair, held Feb. 21, had 22 schools systems, including four private schools, in attendance. Approximately 35 students had job interviews. The Department of Behavioral Sciences and Family Studies will have a career fair March 7 in Brewer Sports Center. The School of Business Career Fair is set for March 14.
“This office and the service it provides students and alumni in career development are vital to who we are and what we are all about,” says Brown. “Our goal for the upcoming year is to get off campus and talk to businesses in order to promote FHU and the students.”
