FHU's 'Secret Garden' to Open Homecoming Weekend

OCTOBER 21, 2013

Freed-Hardeman University Theatre will present a musical retelling of “The Secret Garden” Nov. 7-9 in Loyd Auditorium. The play, based on the classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is sure to delight as students, faculty and alumni come together for FHU’s Homecoming 2013 production.

“The Secret Garden” follows the orphaned Mary Lennox as she moves to England to live with her embittered uncle and his invalid son. As she adjusts to the lonely Misselthwaite Manor, Mary finds a hidden garden and determines to nurse it. In time, she restores the garden as well as hope to those living in the manor.

The cast, comprised of students and faculty members, features sophomore Abby Lambert, a theatre performance major from Milan, Tenn., as Mary Lennox; senior Riley Bowers, a music major from Springfield, Tenn., as Archibald Craven; and junior Maddie Alden, a theatre performance major from College Grove, Tenn., as Lily Craven. Dr. Cliff Thompson, FHU’s director of theatre, will direct the musical with the assistance of Dr. Gary McKnight, associate professor music, and Dr. Richard England, professor of music.

The showings for “The Secret Garden” are Nov. 7-9 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and free for FHU students. To purchase tickets, visit fhutickets.com or contact the theatre office at 731-989-6938.
