49th Annual Benefit Dinner Features The Danberrys

Extreme winter weather forced former first lady Laura Bush to cancel her appearance at FHU's Dec. 6 Benefit Dinner. A back-up speaker was arranged but travel issues forced him to cancel also. The freezing rain also deterred many potential attendees, leaving a sparse crowd and no speaker for the event, which nevertheless raised $1,433,189. Profits support scholarships at FHU.

Those who braved the weather to make the trek to Henderson enjoyed dinner and an abbreviated program. Dorothy Daniel and Ben DeBerry, both FHU alumni, and their band, the Danberrys, provided entertainment as scheduled. "Raising more than a million dollars despite the absence of a speaker shows how much our donors believe in the mission of FHU," Dave Clouse, vice president of university advancement, said. "They still wanted to help with their gifts because they understand the event's purpose."
