The University of Memphis Wind Ensemble premiered “The Flight of Andromeda,” the work of Freed-Hardeman University’s Alan Kinningham. The performance was Tuesday, March 26, at the Harris Concert Hall in Memphis.
“The Flight of Andromeda,” commissioned by the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, gave life to the Greek myth of Andromeda and Perseus. Kinningham captures the story in which Andromeda is chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster and her rescue by Perseus.
Kinningham, an award-winning composer, received his doctorate from the Scheidt School of Music. He has more than 30 years of experience working with music and music education. He currently teaches music theory and orchestration at FHU.
Albert Nguyen, director of bands at the University of Memphis, conducted the Wind Ensemble, comprised of 50 elite wind and percussion musicians. The performance featured soprano Katherine Sheaffer, a vocal performance student at the Scheidt School of Music.
