The Freed-Hardeman golf teams opened the fall 2012 season on a high note with both the men’s and women’s teams claiming victory at the FHU Fall Invitational in Covington, Tenn.
The Lady Lions, fielding a full squad for the first time since 2004, won the six-team event by 34 shots. Freshman Mikayla Dodson was the individual winner, setting the school’s 18 and 36 hole records in the process after shooting 76-80 to win by four shots over teammate Hannah Griffin, who shot 79-81.
The Lions held on to win by four shots at the FHU Invitational over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College. Senior Bryant Cashion and freshman Zack Morton were part of a three-man playoff for the individual title, and Morton won with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
Two weeks later, Dodson broke her own 18-hole record with a two-over 74 in a dual match with Blue Mountain (Miss.) College.
The youth of the Lady Lions showed in a rough outing at the Trevecca Nazarene Nationwide Invitational, as FHU finished eighth in a nine-team field.
Both teams have two tournaments remaining in the fall season.
