Thousands of people from across the country came to hear Comedian Bob Newhart speak at Freed-Hardeman University’s 47th annual Benefit Dinner, held Friday, Dec. 2. Newhart, alongside award-winning bluegrass group Dailey & Vincent, provided the entertainment after guests enjoyed a meal served by FHU’s dining service.
The dinner raised $1,349,172.24 to provide financial assistance to FHU students, which is FHU’s second highest scholarship fundraiser after President George W. Bush’s appearance in 2010. This is FHU’s eleventh year to earn more than $1 million from the Benefit Dinner.
In a press conference before the performance, Newhart stressed the importance of family, laughter, and following your dreams; he stated that his marriage and induction into the Hall of Fame were some of the best moments of his life. He advised those wanting to pursue a career in comedy, “Go for it, and if you fall on your face, at least you find out it wasn’t meant to be.” He added, “But in this current economic time, if you have a job – keep it.” After acting in both television shows and films, Newhart claimed that stand-up is still his favorite trade.
Once on stage, Newhart cracked jokes about everything from airlines to his Catholic background. He entertained the audience with his driving instructor routine and a video highlighting his television career. Dailey & Vincent also entertained the crowd with a variety of music, which included songs such as “Class of ’57” and “More Than a Name on the Wall.”
