Lady Lions Named TranSouth Volleyball Conference Champions

Lady Lions Three-peat as Conference Champs

Entering the final day of the TranSouth Conference Volleyball Championships, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions faced a daunting challenge. FHU had to win three straight matches in order to win another conference championship. So, that's what they did.

Down to their final set, the Lady Lions came back from a 2-1 deficit in the first match against Bethel University to win in five, then swept the Lady Wildcats in the if-necessary match to bring home their third consecutive TranSouth Conference Championship and fourth in the last five years.

The title qualifies the Lady Lions (27-8) for another trip to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round Nov. 19 against Indiana University East (38-8).

Coach Todd Humphry pointed to senior leadership as one of the main reasons for his team's comeback. "Some of our seniors spoke up and challenged us in a good way," he said.

Four members of the Lady Lion squad were named to the All-TranSouth First Team: Fernanda Ferreira, junior; Nataly Gutierrez, senior; Sandra Montoya, senior; and Sydney Rice, senior. Amber Turner, also a senior, was named to the second team.

Humphry shared coach of the year honors with Bethel's Starla Cupples.

It's really great seeing Freed-Hardeman's many achievements. I play on the Varsity volleyball team at Graves County High school, and am looking to play Volleyball at FHU. I am currently a sophomore. My dad, Kevin Fortner, played on the FHU basketball team from 1988-1992. I would love to hear from you all!
