The Lion soccer team has been challenged by change. They added 13 freshmen and lost two big players, last year’s team captains, Archibold Marowa and Simba Zvaita, who have played out their eligibility and must watch from the sidelines. Coach Jason Elliott named Tafara Tinarwo, the only senior on the team, and Philipp Baier, a junior, captains. However, Baier is now injured. The team shows great talent and promise; however, since they are so young, they are still learning to play as a team.
They started the season with a roller coaster ride, losing to Truett-McConnell College but gaining some momentum by winning two games in a row against Point University and Columbia International University. The team lost to Talladega College and Bob Jones University but won its next matches against Johnson Bible College, 3-0, and Williams Baptist College, 2-0.
The Lions were 4-3 before playing Auburn University Montgomery, number 4 in the NAIA. They held AUM to only one goal, but then lost six consecutive matches, four of them by one goal. The Lions then won three in a row.
The Lady Lions have had their ups and downs as well, starting their season with a loss against Truett-McConnell College. The team tied with Point University in a double overtime and then went on to win big, 5-1, over Louisiana College. They tied again with St. Catherine College and defeated Bob Jones University. They lost two to Davenport University and Auburn University Montgomery but defeated Benedictine University in overtime.
The Lady Lions then started a losing streak of seven games, losing to Martin Methodist, Rhodes College, Bethel University, and, in overtime, to Union University. They ended the season by defeating Harris-Stowe, 3-1.
