Both the Lions baseball team and Lady Lions softball team advanced to the NAIA Opening Round in post-season play.
The baseball team opened their tournament run in Montgomery, Alabama, with an 11-2 win over Our Lady of the Lake but fell to top-seeded Vanguard, 6-1, in the second game. They came back on Tuesday in an elimination game to keep the season alive, defeating St. Thomas, 7-6, to advance.
Then, FHU faced Vanguard for the second time in what became the Lions’ final game of the 2021 season. FHU lost, 11-9, in a thriller with several lead changes. The Lions ended their season with a 28-25 record.
The Lady Lions softball team (41-11) took out both College of Idaho and top-seeded host Central Methodist in the NAIA Opening Round in Fayette, Missouri, after delays on Monday pushed the games to Tuesday. Game one against College of Idaho ended in dramatic fashion after the Coyotes took a 2-0 lead into the final inning of play. FHU closed the deficit to win 3-2.
Facing No. 1 seed Central Methodist Eagles in the evening’s second game, the Lady Lions held a 2-0 lead after four innings of play. Brittany Adair threw five strong innings for the Lady Lions, striking out 10 batters, and the Lady Lions held on to win, 3-2.
The Lady Lions softball team (41-13) fell twice to College of Idaho, 9-0 and 4-2, Wednesday, bringing their season to an end. The team’s 41 wins set the record for the most in program history. Twenty-two victories came in an undefeated season at home.
