The Lady Lion volleyball team has found it difficult to defend the conference crown they won last year. Faced with the loss of six starters from last year’s team, they have struggled to win consistently. They started their season with a close win over Lyon College but followed that with four losses: Trevecca Nazarene University, Spring Hill College, Brenau University and University of Mobile. They defeated Reinhardt University to go 2-4 before their first conference event, defeating Mid-Continent University in four games.
After the Lady Lions lost to rival Bethel University in a hard fought match, they participated in the Cumberland University Classic in Lebanon, Tenn., defeating Shawnee State University, Union College and Cumberland University. They lost to Campbellsville University in a hard battle that took four games. A 6’0” senior middle, Fernanda Ferreira, from Minas Gerais, Brazil, was named TranSouth Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the week. She had 77 kills and 39 digs that weekend.
Soon after, they defeated Martin Methodist, putting their conference record at 2-1 and their season record at 7-6. At the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, Tenn., they fell to Lyon College in four games but beat Rhodes College.
Finally at home, the Lady Lions beat Cumberland University and Trevecca University in close matches. Ferreira was again named conference Player of the Week. She had a career-high 31 kills and, in a hard match, had 13 digs. The team lost on the road to Bethel University, but came back home to beat Mid-Continent University.
Conference play ended Oct. 23 with a sweep of Martin Methodist. Lady Lions closed out the regular season at the Boneyard Brawl in Georgetown, Ky. They enter the conference tournament Nov. 5-6 with a 13-11 record.
