With two key players graduated and a new conference that featured some of the top teams in the NAIA, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion volleyball team had a tall task in the 2013 season. While there were struggles at times, there were also big moments that should help set the stage for FHU's second year in the American Midwest Conference.
The highest point came Sept. 14 when the Lady Lions took a thrilling five-set win over NAIA No. 3 Columbia (Mo.) College. Sophomore Daymari Brito (Yaracui, Venezuela) had a huge game with 25 kills, earning NAIA National Player of the Week honors. FHU also had a big win in the quarterfinals of the AMC Conference Tournament, knocking off William Woods (Mo.) in five sets after losing to the Owls in straight sets in the regular season.
Brito was one of the top attackers in the NAIA with her 3.9 kills per set ranking 17th in the nation. Seniors Renata Ferreira (Contagem, Brazil) and Hannah Claiborne (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) both had solid seasons. Ferreira, a setter, finished with an average of 8.6 assists per set while Claiborne had a career-high 154 digs.
The Lady Lions finished the year with a record of 17-10 overall and 8-3 in the American Midwest Conference.
