Mid-South Youth Camp to Break Ground for New Dining Hall

Henderson, Tennessee - Jul 07, 2020

For more than 60 years, Mid-South Youth Camp has been a summer retreat for hundreds of campers. While camp isn’t happening in the traditional way this summer, Mid-South Youth Camp will host a groundbreaking ceremony for its new dining hall Monday, Aug. 3, 2020, at 3:00pm.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, MYSC staff canceled its annual fish fry fundraiser scheduled for July 25, and reshaped events to connect with campers in unique ways.

Some recent events include a virtual bonfire, a “Warm Fuzzy Challenge” and a “Finger lickin’ BBQ Chicken” drive-through fundraiser, which raised $6,697.81 for camp.

MSYC completed its strongest year (June 2019-May 2020) in a decade, raising more than 95% of the funds needed for the new dining hall and outdoor game room and added new members to the camp board.

“The new outdoor game room, Grandma Fern’s Porch, will serve as an additional space for campers to make lifelong friends and memories,” Gayle McDonald, camp co-director, said. “Grandma Fern was my mom, and she loved children and would’ve loved seeing them laugh and enjoy this wonderful place.”

For more than 50 years, Mid-South Youth Camp has been in the life-changing business. Literally thousands of campers have come to MSYC and left as better, stronger people. From its modest beginning as a two-week camp at Chickasaw State Park, the camp has expanded to eight weeks each summer on a 77-acre site outside Henderson, Tennessee.
