Grandparents Day

Sep. 16, 2013

National Grandparents Day was Sunday, September 8. Grandparents are special, and this is a day to celebrate the important role grandparents play in our lives. Many of us can trace our Christian heritage to the influence of our grandparents.

At Freed-Hardeman we have a tradition of selecting honorary grandparents for the FHU student body. For the past several years Mr. Ben Flatt has served that role with much enthusiasm. Although Ben still plans to be very involved with FHU students, this year he has decided it's time to pass the torch along to another set of loving grandparents.

On Monday, September 9, Bob and Joan Brown were announced as the honorary grandparents of Freed-Hardeman University. Originally from Vicksburg, MS, Bob and Joan have become a permanent fixture in the FHU family during the 18 years they have lived in Henderson. From 1995 - 2011, Dr. Bob Brown served on FHU's faculty, teaching in the Science department. For many years 100's of students and community members enjoyed coming to their home each Halloween where they hosted a chili supper that was open to all.

One of the primary reasons Bob and Joan decided to move to Henderson from Vicksburg is because of the students. They have always loved young people and they say one of their greatest blessings has been getting to know these young people.
