Mid-South Youth Camp, located near Henderson, Tennessee, will host the 40th annual fish fry July 22, 2023, to raise funds to enhance the camp. The Yogi Spears family and the Hohenwald Church of Christ began the fish fry in 1982; apart from 2020 when COVID forced its cancellation, the event has continued annually.

Camp board members and volunteers will begin serving a choice of fried catfish or chicken at 4 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m. Guests may dine in Tucker Family Dining Hall or drive through and pick up their meals. Tickets are available from MSYC board members, at the gate and in the dining hall. Cost is $15 each for adults and $10 for children aged 6-11. Aged 5 and under may eat free. Ticket includes catfish or chicken, side items, dessert and drink.

The date coincides with the Hymnal of the Heart Singing at Freed-Hardeman, July 21-22, in Chapel Hall. The event is for anyone who loves to sing, but alumni of FHU’s choral groups are especially invited. There is no cost to attend the event, but registration is requested. “It’s a perfect opportunity for those coming to Henderson for either event to attend both,” Beth Naylor, a member of the MSYC Board, said. “Good food, fine fellowship, great singing and a chance to see all the improvements at FHU and MSYC! What more could one ask?”

What began as a two-week camp at Chickasaw State Park more than 60 years ago has expanded to a 77-acre site just off U.S. 45 South. With its slogan, “a special place where good things happen,” MSYC is operated by Freed-Hardeman University and serves as a place for young people to grow closer to God and to each other during eight weeks of summer and one weekend each fall.
