Strategies for Building Trust to Motivate Adult Learners

Has motivating your students to engage in class discussions and complete assignments proven to be a difficult task in your classroom?  Let’s be honest, we have all struggled with this from time to time. Research has shown that the best way to motivate students is to build meaningful relationships where trust and respect are present.  However, what teachers of all ages struggle with is how to build those types of relationships.

This session will provide proven strategies for building meaningful and trust-filled relationships with college-aged learners by looking at techniques used in coaching including David Rock’s SCARF model.

  • Status – our relative importance to others.

  • Certainty – our ability to predict the future.

  • Autonomy – our sense of control over events.

  • Relatedness – how safe we feel with others.

  • Fairness – how fair we perceive the exchanges between people to be.

Registration is not required but recommended for planning purposes.
