A nursing student's ability to safely and effectively complete a nursing skill is one of the outcomes for a first-semester nursing student. Traditionally, educator evaluation of the student occurs one on one, in the skills lab, with the nursing student performing the skill in front of the educator. Students are extremely nervous, often unprepared, and may be unsuccessful on the first attempt to complete the skill in person. Canvas Studio has changed the way the educator and student complete nursing skill check-offs. Canvas allows the student to record each other performing the skill, provides an opportunity for self-critique and re-recording, and allows for anonymous peer-reviews with constructive feedback. Canvas also allows the educator to provide real-time feedback within the video, the ability to focus on critical components of the skill (zooming in, slowing speed, etc), and most importantly, decreased the number of students repeating their skill. Students have also reported increased confidence in their ability to perform skills in the clinical setting.
