FHU Bible Professor Delivers State Senate Invocation

Henderson, Tennessee - Mar 05, 2019

Freed-Hardeman University Bible professor Billy Smith delivered the invocation for the Tennessee State Senate, Monday, Feb. 25.

Smith described his time at the capitol “a great experience,” but that he considered himself a representative of everyone at Freed-Hardeman. He appreciated the opportunity to visit with Senator Delores Gresham and Representative Kirk Haston, both of whom represent Chester County in the state legislature.

In addition to teaching Bible at FHU, Smith is also one of the ministers of the Henderson Church of Christ. The text of the prayer follows:

Our Father in Heaven,

We come today, in this hallowed chamber, to offer both our praise and petition. We praise You for the gift of life, for each day of life, and especially for the gift of today.

We praise You for Your everlasting love and power, for Your infinite knowledge and wisdom, and for the generosity of Your grace and forgiveness. You are the God of our fathers, and we praise You for being our Father.

We praise You for the beauty of the earth, for the bounty of these United States, and especially, our Father, we praise you for the absolute blessing of our great state of Tennessee; we are humbly proud to be the Volunteer State.

We are ever aware of the richness of our past, the honor of serving our present, and for the bright hope of our future. Therefore, we offer this petition on behalf of the distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen who serve as our Senators, for being our voice and who seek our welfare. May their sacrificial service lead our beautiful state to even greater heights of achievement and accomplishment.

And now, our Father, may the wisdom of Your way always be our way, may the truth of Your will always be our will, and may the urgency of your work always be our work.

In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
