The 82nd Annual Bible Lectureship at Freed-Hardeman University, is set for Feb. 4-8, 2018. More than 150 speakers will address the theme, “Entrusted with the Faith: Multigenerational Mission in Timothy and Titus.”
“The intergenerational theme has a strong appeal for me,” FHU President David Shannon said. “Living and working among some of the brightest and best students in the world has made me more aware than ever of their potential for good.”
Lectureship director Doug Burleson said this year’s lectureship was planned specifically with the intergenerational church in mind. Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus call on Christians to hold onto the faith, despite the generational differences between himself, the younger preachers and their audiences, Burleson noted. “God’s message through Paul to Timothy and Titus must not be forgotten,” he said.
Various demographics within the church will have sessions designed especially for them. These will include a kids’ lectureship, teen lectureship, night sessions especially for university students and ladies’ programming.
Workshops for Bible school teachers, youth/family ministers and workers with Hispanic ministries will be conducted during the week. Special topics for the week will include the following: addictive behaviors, Bible translations, intentional mentoring, life in a small church, preacher therapy and wisdom and true wealth.
The 2018 Lectureship is dedicated to Dr. Sam Jones, retired FHU teacher and administrator. He was a member of the FHU faculty 1991-2017, serving as department chair, dean and vice president. For 24 years, he was a member of the lectureship committee. However, he was first and foremost a gospel preacher. Today, he fills his schedule with gospel meetings, lectureships, seminars and professional workshops.
A dinner in Jones’ honor is planned for Tuesday evening, Feb. 6, 2018, in Brewer Sports Center’s auxiliary gym. Tickets are $15 and may be ordered before Jan. 29, 2018, by calling Alice Holtin at 731-989-6769 until Monday, Jan. 29. After that, tickets must be purchased on campus from Holly Chism in the president’s office in Loyd Auditorium.
A complete schedule of Lectureship events and registration information are available at fhu.edu/lectureship. Tickets to the Jones appreciation dinner and copies of the lectureship book and jump drive may be purchased at this site, also.
