Freed-Hardeman University will honor 2020 spring and winter graduates at separate ceremonies Saturday, Nov. 21, in Loyd Auditorium.
Degrees will be conferred upon August and November graduates at 10:00am. Fifty-six are expected to receive baccalaureate degrees while 37 are scheduled to complete graduate degrees, including six doctoral students who have completed their programs.
A ceremony recognizing the May graduates will be conducted at 2:00pm.
Degrees have already been conferred upon 260 undergraduates and 83 graduate students. Commencement exercises for the May 2020 graduates were twice postponed because of COVID-19. Former FHU First Lady Laurel Sewell will speak at the 2:00pm celebration. In addition, the Faculty Scholarship-Leadership Medal will be presented at this time.
The ceremonies are ticket only events. Graduates may reserve up to four tickets and guests must present a printed or digital ticket to enter Loyd Auditorium. The ceremonies will be live-streamed at www.fhu.edu/commencement. Graduates and guests are required to wear masks and temperatures will be checked before entry into the auditorium. Seating capacity in Loyd Auditorium will be at 50%.
Laurel Sewell continues to work with her husband, former president and now chancellor Milton Sewell, in entertaining guests of the university and speaking on behalf of Christian education. She is very active with the FHU Associates, a group she has served as national president as well as in other offices.
She is a graduate of Mars Hill Bible School and Florence State College, now University of North Alabama. A frequent speaker at ladies’ days and at lectureships, she is also the author of “The Six Gifts of Hospitality” and has contributed articles to several Christian publications.
Former Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist appointed her to the Clean Tennessee Advisory Council as a part of Keep Tennessee Beautiful. The council helped craft legislation and educational programs for recycling in Tennessee. In addition, Mars Hill Bible School honored her as its Alumna of the Year and FHU named her the school’s Honorary Alumna of the Year.
