Freed-Hardeman University has announced the cancellation of Homecoming festivities for 2020. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the traditional event, scheduled for Nov. 6-8, has been called off for the first time in more than 65 years.
Building on the momentum of two years of record enrollment, Freed-Hardeman University has again received strong rankings from U.S. News & World Report. FHU is included in the top one-third of Regional Universities in the South and eighth in Best Value Schools in the organization’s 2021 Best Colleges report.
The selection committee for Freed-Hardeman University’s Sports Hall of Fame has chosen two athletes for the 2020 class. Jim Carter, Lion first baseman from 1995 to 1997, and Haley Newby McRady, All-American Lady Lion basketball player who graduated in 2015. The official induction is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 14 during Homecoming weekend.
Freed-Hardeman University celebrated the 2020 Mr. and Miss FHU, Katie Morris and Kenneth Moore, Saturday, Aug. 22, in a ceremony in Chapel Hall. The event was delayed because of COVID-19 and the subsequent early end of the spring semester.
In the midst of a pandemic, Freed-Hardeman University has again set enrollment records. Total headcount for Fall 2020 stands at 2,188 students, with 1,727 of those being undergraduates. Both are all-time highs.
Freed-Hardeman University will recognize the 2020 Mr. and Miss FHU Saturday, Aug. 22, at 11:00am in Chapel Hall. The celebration will be live-streamed at FHU.edu/onlineevents. Typically held in the spring semester, the celebration of this year’s winners was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Freed-Hardeman University Board of Trustees added a new member at their July 2020 meeting. Curt Zondervan, Hudsonville, Michigan, is the newest member of the board.
Mylie McKissack, an instructional coach in the Lewis County school system, has been added to the board of Mid-South Youth Camp in Henderson, Tennessee.
Mid-South Youth Camp, owned by Freed-Hardeman University, broke ground Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2020, on a $1.85 million dining hall. Charles Tucker Dining Hall is scheduled to be completed in time for camp in 2021.
Freed-Hardeman University students are returning to campus this week for the fall semester. Freshmen are expected to arrive Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 5 and 6, to move into their residence halls. A drive-through registration when students arrive on campus will enable them to remain in their cars until they are ready to transfer their belongings to the dorm.
