Candidates for the Doctor of Education presented copies of their dissertations to Hope Barber Shull Academic Resource Center. Writing and defending the dissertations complete the requirements for the doctoral degree.

 

 

Party on the Green

Party on the Green was held during the weekend of Makin’ Music 40 to provide alumni and friends with the opportunity to enjoy fellowship, food and fun in between Saturday performances.

 

FHU 2017 Retirees Honored at Reception

On Friday, April 28, the FHU 2017 retirees were recognized in chapel and at a reception. The retirees honored were Mrs. Carole Childers, Mrs. Debbie Cone, Dr. Joe DeLay, Dr. Sam Jones, Mrs. Melanie Linder, Mr. Robert Taylor and Ms. Rhonda Thompson.

Commencement

At commencement ceremonies held in Loyd Auditorium Dec. 16 and May 13, new alumni received bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. At the May graduation,  President Joe Wiley was the speaker and referred to his last time wearing the “bling” (the nickname students have given the presidential medallion). Also in May, an honorary master’s degree was awarded posthumously to Todd Walker, who was diagnosed with amyotrophic laterals sclerosis (ALS) and passed away before completing the degree. Concluding the spring ceremony, Cassie Sikes and Darren Heintzman received the Faculty Scholarship-Leadership Medal.

 

 

Nursing Pinning

Held the evening before May graduation, the traditional pinning ceremony marked nursing students’ transition into their profession. Each participant received FHU’s unique pin.

Theatre - "Blithe Spirit"

The “Blithe Spirit” cast included:  Carson Barker, Samantha McMillan, Summer Turner, Shelby Matthews, Kevin Record, Briana Whitsitt and Katie Collier. Alumna Tansy Matheny was assisted by Dr. Cliff Thompson in directing the play, which ran for two weekends beginning April 20. Audiences enjoyed the performance on the backstage of Loyd Auditorium.

Theatre - "Eleemosynary"

“Eleemosynary” opened March 9 and ran for two weekends at The Black Box Theatre. Directed by alumna Hannah Graves, the play featured three student cast members, Amanda Baugh, Marla Nordstrom and Adrianna Vance.

 

 

Lectureship

The 81st Annual Bible Lectureship, “‘Identity in Crisis: Daniel’s Vision for the Future,” was Feb. 5-9. The week included several dinners, including the appreciation dinner honoring alumnus John Dale. Sessions throughout the week focused on a variety of areas: business, the Tarbet rare Bible collection, Christian caretakers, evangelism, youth and family, Hispanic ministries and women, children and teens. Early morning prayer sessions opened the days, and late-night devotionals for college students closed them. The Lectureship Chorus, led by John R. Hall and Dr. Gary McKnight, Chorale and others performed. Vendors filled the Brewer Sports Center, where the Associates welcomed guests and provided relaxing venues for lunch, refreshments and coffee.

Theatre - "Greater Tuna"

“Greater Tuna” ran two weekends, beginning Jan. 26 in the Black Box Theatre. The two actors who played all parts were Alec Wimmer and Bradon Miller. Carson Barker directed the performance.

 

Benefit Dinner

The 52nd Annual Benefit Dinner, held Dec. 2, grossed almost $1.7 million. Peyton Manning, retired quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, spoke and was part of a question-and-answer session conducted by President Joe Wiley. A group of alumni and students, The Pride of FHU, performed at the beginning of the program under the direction of alumna Peggy Weaver.

Homecoming

Held Nov. 11-12, the traditional fall celebration’s theme was “Feels Like Home to Me.” Royalty selected were: Cassie Sikes, queen; Noah Icenhour, king; senior representatives: Rayna Glass, Savannah Mills, Landen Wright and Cody Nicholson; junior representatives: Kirby Gatlin, Caitlyn Carter, Richard Turner and Jacob Holmes; sophomore representatives: Lydia Powers, Zoie Birdwell, Drew Ferguson and Nash Hearn; and freshman representatives: Conley Clouse, Amelia Rogers, Ben Coleman and Blair Varner. Phi Kappa Alpha was the winner of the Homecoming Spirit Trophy. The men’s basketball team fell to Talladega College, while the Lady Lions defeated Bethel University in overtime.

Theatre - "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"

“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” opened the 2016-17 FHU Theatre season Oct. 13. The cast performing for sold-out crowds was: John Mark Redding as Charlie Brown; Miriam Sparks as Snoopy; Tansy Matheny as Lucy; Braden Miller as Schroeder; Shelby Matthews as Sally; and Alec Wimmer as Linus. Dr. Richard England, Steve Browning and Richard England, III, provided accompaniment. Dr. Cliff Thompson, along with Matheny and Richard England, directed the performance.

 

 

Mixer

Social clubs covered Bader Green in club colors and cheers, as they hosted their annual mixer to recruit new members and kick off the 2016-17 year.

RUSH

The admissions team hosted thousands of prospective students for The Desert: RUSH 2016, held Sept. 16-18. In addition to classes and keynote speeches, guests attended a Cereus Bright concert and the Jim Wand show, a longtime favorite.

Tolling of the Bell

Milton and Laurel Sewell served as Masters of the Bell for the opening academic ceremony. First-time student Keith Mattix II represented the student body in the ceremony.

 

Welcome Home

As faculty and staff prepared to welcome students for the fall semester, Dr. C.J. Vires led a group to different buildings on campus to pray for students. Saturday, Aug. 20, the FHU family greeted students and guests at Welcome Home, as they helped them move into their new home away from home.
