Long before computers with endless memory storage, Freed-Hardeman had its own data bank, owned and operated by former president E. Claude Gardner. He knew and could recall, it seemed, every person who had been affiliated with Freed-Hardeman - a valuable resource in his raising funds for the university, I’m sure. He knew who you were, where you came from and where your mama went to church. And, some would say, he also knew your position on brotherhood issues. Even as his body grew weaker, that amazing memory never failed.

Browns Share Tips for Success

Students were seeking to learn more about the Browns’ success and their contributions to the university.

Stepping out in faith and seeking guidance from the Lord is how Dr. Elizabeth Ann Saunders has made many of the big decisions in her life. When she chose to be one of the first black students to attend Freed-Hardeman in the late 1960s instead of another school where she would not have been in the minority, Saunders prayed about her decision. In 1967 she became Freed-Hardeman’s first black graduate. Eleven years later, Saunders sought guidance from the Lord when she was a candidate for a teaching position at her alma mater. She became Freed-Hardeman’s first black faculty member in 1978.

Tarbets Loan Rare Works by Erasmus to University

Long-time minister David Tarbet and his wife Paula have placed on loan to FHU a 1522 Erasmus New Testament, third edition, and two Paraphrases (commentaries) by Erasmus. The Tarbets were recognized for their generosity during the Graduate Theology Research Symposium Nov. 2, 2018.

FHU Benefit Dinner Continues Tradition of Success

The 2017 benefit dinner at Freed-Hardeman University Friday night, Dec. 1, 2017, generated more than $1.3 million for scholarships at FHU. The event featured Tim Tebow, Heisman trophy winner, professional football player and football analyst for the SEC network. This marked the 18th consecutive year the FHU benefit has raised more than $1 million.

Xi Chi Delta Sweeps Makin’ Music Awards

Social club Xi Chi Delta swept the 2018 Makin’ Music awards Saturday night, April 7, 2018. Their “A Venture with the Vikings” won the sweepstakes award, placing first in every category of judging. Second and third place in the sweepstakes went to Phi Kappa Alpha’s “Rather Be in Hollywood” and Chi Beta Chi’s “Somewhere in My Memory,” respectively. Theta Nu won the Spirit of Makin’ Music award which was presented Friday night to the club who best embodies the spirit of the event.

The crossing of the Red Sea is an impressively theatrical and historical event between the Israelites and Egyptians drawn from Exodus 14, “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.”

Mr. and Miss FHU 2018 Announced

Beau Caviness, an exercise science major from Memphis, and Eden Clouse, a nursing major from Jackson, Tennessee, were named Mr. and Miss FHU during the spring 2018 semester. The honorees were chosen from the senior class by a vote of the faculty and staff based on the nominees’ character, influence, involvement, leadership and academic ability.

FHU Clayton Investment Team Celebrates 10 Years

Freed-Hardeman University business majors, both past and present, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Clayton Investment Team last fall. More than half of the investment team’s alumni returned to FHU’s campus to attend the reunion, which included an evening reception and program, a panel discussion with alumni and current students and the opportunity for alumni to observe a financial strategy meeting with current members of the team.
